Why coaching?

You might be asking yourself: why coaching?

It’s a fair question. Many don’t know much about coaching for career and leadership development. It can be a transformative experience. These are my perspectives on how coaching can help you break through critical moments in your career.

Because you don’t know what you don’t know

Most of us are promoted for being great at the work, not for leading people. Coaching gives you a thinking partner while you learn, so you can shorten the learning curve and avoid the mistakes no one warned you about.

Because confidence follows evidence

Many new leaders quietly wonder whether they’re qualified. In coaching, you get honest reflection of your strengths and wins, so the story you tell yourself starts to match the work you’ve done.

Because someone has sat in the room

It helps to learn from someone who has seen how decisions about people get made, and who will tell you, with your permission, what that means for you.

The research

Coaching works, and your coach’s credentials matter

In a global study of more than 30,000 people in 30 countries and territories, people who had worked with a coach described what changed for them.

41%

reported more self-esteem and self-confidence

55%

were very satisfied when their coach held a credential, compared with 27% when the coach did not

85%

of people who had worked with a coach said it is important or very important that the coach is credentialed

Source: 2022 ICF Global Consumer Awareness Study, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers for the International Coaching Federation. 30,727 people in 30 countries and territories took part, and 10,841 of them had worked with a coach. People could choose more than one impact.

How coaching is different

Which kind of support do you need?

These services overlap, and each one is valuable. Knowing which one you need helps you get the right support.

Coaching vs. mentoring

A mentor draws on their own career to guide yours. A coach starts with your goals and your questions, and you set the agenda. I share what I’ve learned as a mentor only when you invite it.

Coaching vs. consulting

A consultant studies a problem and hands you a solution. A coach helps you find your own answer, and holds you to acting on it.

Coaching vs. therapy

Therapy is led by a licensed clinician and works with emotional health and past experiences. Coaching looks ahead, toward your goals and how you lead.

Coaching vs. training

Training teaches a set skill or body of knowledge, usually to a group. Coaching is shaped around one person’s goals and situation.

What coaching isn’t

Coaching isn’t for people who are broken

It isn’t therapy, and it isn’t a fix for something wrong with you. Coaching is a partnership for people who are already capable and want support to grow with intention.
